Gift cards — how they work

Buying, sending, and redeeming a gift card on a clinic storefront.

2-min readUpdated

Most storefronts on the platform sell gift cards. Here is how they work end to end.

Buying

Find the gift card on the clinic's storefront — usually in a "Gift" section or linked from the navigation. Pick an amount (preset values or custom), enter the recipient's email and an optional message, and check out like any other product.

The gift card is sent to the recipient by email at the time you specify (immediately, on a future date, or on a specific holiday).

Receiving

The recipient gets an email with a card image, a code, and a link to the storefront. They click the link, the code is automatically applied to their account when they sign in or sign up, and the balance shows in their account.

Redeeming

At checkout, signed-in customers with a gift card balance see "Apply gift card balance" as an option. Tap it to use part or all of the balance toward the order. If the order exceeds the balance, the rest is paid by the regular payment method.

Multiple gift cards

A customer can have multiple gift card balances on their account. They are pooled — the checkout uses the oldest balance first. There is no need to track or apply codes individually after the first redemption.

Expiration

Gift cards on the platform do not expire. Some states limit expiration; we have chosen never to expire them anywhere, regardless of state.

Refunds

If a gift card was purchased by mistake, the buyer can refund it within 14 days as long as the recipient has not redeemed any of the balance. After 14 days, or if any balance has been used, gift card refunds need to be handled case-by-case with the clinic.
